Questionnaire Analysis

I asked 10 people in total to answer my questionnaire. The people I asked were chosen because they read Kerrang! magazine. There were 6 boys and 4 girls, mainly aged 17 - 20.

My magazine will be targeted towards both genders and I will not be biased towards one gender. However, my target age group will be 17-20, so my content can include mature references e.g. drugs. 

When it got to music genres, not one person picked "pop" as their most listened to genre. This shows that no mainstream chart music would be featured in my magazine. The most popular genre was pop punk, so I will include lots of music from the pop punk genre.
 

 

 

Most people stated that the thing that interests them most about a music magazine is the posters/pictures. This means that my magazine should be full of good photographs of high quality. I should also include a section in the magazine where there are posters. I should make it easy for readers to cut out pictures because a lot of people want to use the pictures from magazines and stick them on their wall.

 

For the price of the magazine, most people were willing to pay up to £4 for a music magazine. However, no one said they would pay over £4. The most popular one chosen was £3 - £4, so my magazine price will be within that range.

 

 

Almost everyone was mostly interested in the cover photo of a music magazine. This means my cover photo has to be eye-capturing as that's what the reader will be interested in first.

 

 

 



My last question was an open question, asking them to name their favourite artists. Here are all the ones mentioned:

Most of the artists are bands. the most popular ones being 'You Me At Six' and 'Bring Me The Horizon', taking up 11% each. The most popular bands are all very similar, which helps me with my magazine as people will most likely read my magazine if the bands and artists mentioned are popular. 

From doing this questionnaire, I can get an inside view of what a reader's looking for when looking for and reading a music magazine.

Photoshoot Plan

I have chosen to base my model on Avril Lavigne as I know a lot more about her style and that would be much more fun to shoot. 

For her hair, I'm going to use a blonde wig, as my model is brunette and has a wig similar to Avril's hair. I may add pink to the wig to make it more like Avril's. I'm going to do her makeup myself based on this photo: 

I will look at other magazine's Avril has been on the front cover of as inspiration for the photo I want to shoot. Here are a few:

I will use a white background as I would like my magazine to be white. I will try out a range of clothing and accessories on my model and see what looks best. 

The photoshoot will be taking place at school using the school equipment. 

Choosing A Cover Celebrity

I have decided I am going to use my friend, Jenny as a model. I am still contemplating whether to base my model on Avril Lavigne or Taylor Jardine from 'We Are The In Crowd'.

Taylor's image is much more casual, natural and real. The pictures would be more smiley and fun. Her clothing would be casual, everyday clothing and her hair and makeup - very natural.

Avril's image is a lot more glamourous, her eyeliner is very heavy and her makeup is very colourful. She normally has different colours in her hair, and her hair is usually messy, wavy and big. Her fashion sense is very edgy, including lots of bright neon colours, skulls and black.

I carefully selected my sample and only asked people who read Kerrang! magazine because they are most likely going to be interested in the genre of my magazine will feature.

So far, I have only asked 5 people. I am transferring all of my data onto Microsoft Excel, then I am going to make charts out of the data to make it easier to understand.

Billboard Cover Analysis

Billboard magazine is named after the billboard charts in the US. The magazine is focused on current music and features celebrities that are at the top of the charts. It appeals to people who like all music genres as, inside the magazine, there is a chart list from lots of different genres.

The colours used in this cover of Billboard magazine are very mature colours as this issue features Eminem's comeback after going through a rough time. He wants to seem more mature and serious about his music. In his picture, he has his hand over his heart, a gesture people usually do when they are grateful for something. This is probably aimed at his fans, and even God, as he's a Christian. His facial expression is serious and he looks very clean indicating a fresh start to his life. The lighting causes the picture to be of high contrast, adding to the serious feel. This clothing is dark and causal, unlike his previous clothing style that made him look very immature.

Billboard's logo is used on every magazine as the masthead, to keep it consistent for the reader and easily recognisable. The coverlines stay off of Eminem's face to show him to be of high importance and the main feature in the magazine. The colour scheme is lime green, white and black, which make the magazine look mature but not boring. The fonts are all very similar as the article about Eminem will be a serious article, and the cover needs to give of that impression. If there are too many different types of fonts, the focus is taken away from the seriousness of this issue.

The magazine mentions lots of different artists such as Drake, Tom Petty, Mike Posner, Enrique Iglesias and others, making it appeal to a lot of readers. Billboard is a magazine that appeals to lots of music producers, DJs, record labels, artists, etc. So articles abnout the Emi's are very much appealling.
